1.9 million cubic metres dug up from Panama Canal

2008-4-29

Some 1.9 million cubic metres of earth has been removed from the first dry excavation project for the creation of Panama Canal's new Pacific Locks access channel.

The new channel will link a new, third set of locks on the Pacific end of the canal with the existing Gaillard Cut (the narrowest stretch in the Panama Canal). Panama's Constructora Urbana, SA has completed 35 per cent of the project to be completed by the end of next year.

Cilsa Minera Maria, was awarded the second dry excavation contract for the Expansion Program; and from last March through the end of this month, it has excavated 44,000 cubic metres.
