Oil prices induce WTSA to levy US$600-$900 per FEU bunker surcharge

2008-4-2

The Western Transpacific Stabilisation Agreement has announced a US$200 per FEU bunker surcharge for wastepaper and $300 per FEU for agricultural products, chemicals, clay, forest products, hay, metal scrap, plastic scrap and freight-all-kinds on (FAK) mixed container shipments.

Further increases of $600 per FEU and $900 per FEU will come July 1 and October 1 respectively. (Customers currently paying this amount or higher will not be affected, said the WTSA.)

By January, WTA member lines are expected to have all tariff and contract cargo move under floating bunker surcharges.

"They have been recovering only a fraction of those costs for a period of years, and they have now adopted a programme to incrementally raise surcharges from the levels now paid to the full level," said the Wyse's Brian Conrad.

Bunker fuel prices in the transpacific rose from $198 per metric ton at the beginning of 2005 to $530 in mid-March of this year.

In other news, another quasi conference, the Canadian Transpacific Stabilisation Agreement, also announced an increase in its bunker surcharge will rise to US$796 per TEU with FEU surcharges rising to $995 and for 40-foot high cube and 45-foot containers will to $1,120 and $1,260 respectively, a statement issued by the group said.

The currency adjustment factor will also rise to eight per cent on all origins including Japan and the PRC, the statement said.
