CMA CGM, the world's third largest shipping company, has announced that it has been selected by the Port of Marseilles Authority as the winning bidder for a project to develop Europe's largest dry dock.
The French shipping giant sees the project, which will create 800 jobs, in two parts: 1) To develop ship repair operations to meet the increasing demand for dry dock capacity and 2) create yacht port equipped with 130 slips to hold boats of 100 metres in length. This marina will include a resort hotel, shopping and a yacht shipyard.
Berths able to accommodate vessels over 350 metres are rare and the impressive size of Dock 10 - 465 metres long with 10 hectares of wharf area and a 17 metres draft - "offer huge potential", said a CMA CGM statement.
"By creating a harmonious architectural framework that brings together operations for commercial and pleasure craft, the project will contribute to the revitalisation of Marseille as a thriving hub of industry and tourism," said a statement from the shipping line.
CMA CGM operates a fleet of over 380 vessels, including 101 company-owned, and has 77 vessels on order.
