German shipping group DSR plans to develop three Baltic Sea container terminals, including one in the Latvian capital Riga.
This comes amid DSR (Deutsche Seereederei) forecasts that container shipping in the Baltic region will soar from 5 million units at present to 20 million annually in the future, according to comments by the group's chief executive Horst Rahe.
He said Rostock-based DSR was examining the feasibility of building three terminals on the coast in order to set up its own port network over the next seven to 10 years. To this end, DSR has established a port operations subsidiary, reports the UK Earthtimes.
DSR was formerly a state shipping line in communist East Germany, which has been privatised for 15 years.
