2008-3-18

The waterway standard of the Chongqing-Yibin section of Yangtze River will be upgraded to the Third Grade by the year 2010 when the waterway is deep enough to accommodate 1,000-tonne vessels, Xinhua reported.

Work on the dredging projects of Chongqing-Luzhou waterway and Luzhou-Yibin waterway have been started to achieve the goal, the report said.

This year the shipping authority of the Yangtze River will start work to get rid of seven dangerous shallows on the Anqing-Nanjing section, the lower stream of Yangtze, the report said.

The authority will also continue the underwater drilling and blasting project in the Yangtze Three Gorges Reservoir, the upper stream, so that 10,000 tonne vessels can directly sail from the Three Gorges Dam to Chongqing, the report said.

China invested CNY810 million (US$113.19 million) in Yangtze River dredging last year and a number of dangerous shallows were removed, including 10 in the Yichang-Chenglingji section, the report said.
