Safmarine names first of nine new box ships

2008-2-22

Safmarine has named the first of nine new ships to be delivered this year. Seven of the box ships are Safmarine-owned vessels, while two are on long-term charter.

"This year's ambitious fleet expansion programme -the largest in the history of Safmarine - has been made possible by the good support of our customers," said Safmarine CEO Ivan Heesom-Green. "Not only has their support allowed us to invest in new tonnage, but also operate our fleet in a more fuel-efficient manner."

Hull 466, the 2,474-TEU Safmarine Ngami, was named at Germany's Volkswerft Stralsund Shipyard. The new vessel's name was inspired by Lake Ngami in Botswana, north of the Kalahari.

The Safmarine Ngami has a crew of 17 and will enter into service after sea trials.
