Figures from the Hong Kong Marine Department show the container port handled 2.06 million TEU in January, an increase of 4.1 per cent over the 1.9 million throughput in January last year, but down 2.7 per cent in a month to month comparison against the 2.12 million TEU moved in December.
The Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) reported a 13 per cent year-on-year increase in January to 2.45 million TEU against January 2007's throughput of 2.1 million TEU. In January, Singapore suffered a 1.07 per cent month-to-month drop from December's volume of 2.48 million TEU.
Two Hong Kong newspapers Taikungpao and Wenweipao, reputedly the best connected to China mainland sources, reported that Shanghai's January throughput was 2.35 million TEU, up 14.8 per cent year on year.
The two newspapers also reported that Shenzhen, the mainland port city adjacent to Hong Kong, experienced a January throughput of 1.8 million TEU, up 12.3 per cent year on year.
Combined, Hong Kong and Shenzhen had throughput of 3.8 million TEU in January against Singapore's 2.4 million and Shanghai's 2.3 million TEU.
