2008-2-1

Duisport has reported that total cargo throughput at its ports reached 55.1 tons in 2007, a year on year increase of 11 per cent, after ships, trains and trucks moved an additional 5.4 million tons of freight compared to 2006.

A statement from Duisburger Hafen AG, the owner of the public Port of Duisburg and the parent company of the Duisburger Hafen Group, said that when including figures from company ports, volumes handled by Duisburg terminals came to more than 100 million tons, according to preliminary figures.

Duisport container transfers were at a record level of 901,000 TEU, up 14 per cent over 2006. Growth in the container segment was mainly supported by train services, which advanced by 23 per cent to 531,000 TEU. "Our railroad cargo growth easily outperforms the [German] market average," said Duisburger Hafen's CEO Erich Staake.

Iron and steel cargo also achieved a record of 5.8 million tons, up nine per cent year on year. In bulk cargo, imported coal hit a seven-year high of 6.8 million tons, an increase of 19 per cent, the release added.
