IMO insists on identification, tracking on all ships within year

2008-1-4

The International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) new amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention comes into force this month and requires all ship operators to test and fit long-range identification and tracking systems (LRIT) within a year.

LRIT will be a mandatory requirement on the following ships on international voyages: passenger ships, including high-speed craft; cargo ships of more than 300 gross tons and mobile offshore drilling units.

Amendments to IMO instruments will also come into play at the same time and will cover training requirements for ship security officers, the launching and recovery of fast rescue boats and an amendment to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.
