Shanghai's 2007 box throughput grows 20pc to 26 million TEU

Shanghai port's 2007 container throughput rose by 20.4 per cent to reach 26.15 million TEU, the Shanghai Port and Shipping Bureau reported.

In 2007 the largest seaport in China handled a total of 560 million tonnes of cargo, up 4.2 per cent compared with 2006. Within this total, import and export cargo grew by 19.7 per cent year on year to 255 million tonnes.

The bureau said that volume of general cargo handled for the whole of last year was the highest among all ports worldwide, a ranking the port of Shanghai has attained for the third year in a row, reports Xinhua News Agency.

The port of Shanghai is now equipped with 42 container berths and it is connected to more than 300 ports worldwide.
