UPS joins FedEx in announcing 5.4pc LTL rate increase

2008-1-18

UPS Freight has announced that it will increase its non-contractual rates of 5.4 per cent from February 4 on less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments in the US and Canada, impacting on costs of smaller businesses not likely to ship by the full truckload.

The increase follows FedEx Corp.'s announcement of a 5.48 per cent rate increase to go into effect on January 14.

But some shippers, report CNN, say carriers have been flexible on rates and surcharges because of declining demand and increased competition, especially in the LTL market. "So be prepared to hear a higher initial quote, but then to be able to negotiate," said one quoted by CNN.
