India's 12 major ports have experienced a 22.16 per cent increase in container throughput volumes between April and November, 2007, compared to the same eight-month period a year earlier, reports The Times of India.
Citing figures from the Indian Ports Association (IPA), it said that the nation's 12 leading ports handled 4.53 million TEU during the reporting period, up from 46.75 million tonnes of containerised cargo or 3.59 million TEU for April to November 2006.
The report attributed the surge in container throughput to a rise of up to 25 per cent in the volume of exported goods handled by Indian ports in 2007, particularly finished goods that require transportation in container boxes, according to unidentified sources.
The nation's top container port is Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), which handles 55 per cent of India's box trade, the report added.
