ELAA to provide volume data ahead of EU conference ban

2008-1-10

Irish software firm PS Technology has been awarded a contract by the European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA) to operate its new information exchange system, which comprises a database of trade volumes shipped to and from Europe by individual ports, reports UK Transport Intelligence.

"We will be publishing information about the output shippers. This information will be highly useful to all in our industry," said ELAA executive director Chris Bourne.

This development comes ahead of the planned repeal of the EU Liner Shipping Conference Block Exemption mid-October. Thereafter, container shipping conferences servicing routes to and from Europe will be banned with the exception of those on transatlantic routes.

The report noted that liner shipping conferences were traditionally used as a means to exchange volume statistics on particular trades.

Testing of the new information exchange system for ELAA is expected to begin early this year so as to have the system up and running by October when the EU Liner Shipping Conference Block Exemption is scrapped.
