Guangzhou yard to build two Transworld ships for Singapore-Mideast run

2007-12-23

UAE-based logistics and shipping firm Transworld has awarded a US$80 million shipbuilding contract to China's Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard for two 1,740-TEU ships, Gulf News reported.

The order is in line with Transworld's aim to strengthen its fleet given the growing demand for sea freight services.

The two geared vessels can travel at 21 knots and are compliant with requirements at different ports and are suited for its primary operations, which include short sea routes providing weekly connections to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Colombo and the Middle East to Jebel Ali, Colombo and Singapore.

"With trade in the Middle East region growing six to seven per cent annually, we can expect increases in business activities within the region," said Transworld Group chairman S Ramakrishnan.

"We have commissioned Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard to work on the single largest order placed by our company this year, which will boost our fleet to a total of 24 vessels by 2011," he said.

Dubai is poised to become a major transshipment hub with the rapid growth in sea and airfreight to India, Middle East, Africa and Europe.
