Berth damage delays iron ore shipments in Rio port

2007-12-17

An accident that damaged a berth of a port in Rio de Janeiro state has delayed vessels from taking shipments of iron ore from Brazil to China, port authorities said Friday.

On Dec. 8, a vessel hit a berthing dolphin at a terminal of Sepetiba port and repair work will take 30 to 40 days.

The damage has caused delays of iron ore shipments from several mining companies like Brazil's Vale as iron ore could not be loaded to the vessels, the authorities said.

Three vessels have not been loaded due to the berth damage, it said.

In a statement, Vale said the terminal of port Sepetiba is the smallest one used by the company for iron ore shipments.

Vale said it will try to reallocate iron ore shipments as the other terminals at Sepetiba continue to operate normally.

Port officials said they will try to resume shipments at the berth on Dec. 15.
