DHS, TSA put LALB workers in TWIC

2007-12-12

Port workers, longshoremen, truckers and others at the LA-Long Beach port complex began enrolling in the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) programme today.

The programme's goal is to ensure that all workers with unescorted access to secure areas at port facilities and vessels has received a thorough background check and does not pose a threat to security.

Ultimately, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will establish fixed enrollment centres at 147 ports and will deploy mobile enrollment centres to dozens of other locations as needed. The Ports of LA-Long Beach are among the first 25 ports in the nation to begin enrolling applicants for the TWIC.
