Yangshan Deep-Water Port, the biggest port in China and regarded as a key project to build Shanghai into an international shipping center, is expected to own a combined handling capacity of 15 million TEUs by 2010, almost 70 percent of the actual container throughput of Shanghai Port last year.
In order to achieve the goal, a total of 21 berths will be constructed at the port during the country's Eleventh Five-Year Plan period from 2006 to 2010.
Of which, three will be 100,000-tonne berths, eight will be 70,000-tonne berths, two will be 35,000-tonne berths and the remaining eight will be regional berths with tonnages of no more than 10,000 tonnes respectively.
Presently, the first and the second phase of the project have been kicked off construction.
Shanghai Port, the world's third largest container port after Singapore and Hong Kong, is expected to achieve an annual handling capacity of cargo of 600 millions with annual container throughput of 24 milling TEUs by the year-end of 2010.
