Authorities from Northport, the largest multipurpose port in Malaysia, have announced that in 2008 they will be extending the scope of the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities to include schoolchildren. In the last few years, the port's CSR initiatives have been aimed at customers, employees and staff families.
In January next year, Northport will encourage children to enter the Bahasa Malaysia Essay Competition for secondary schools that is being held in association with Utusan Malaysia and will be officiated by Malaysian Education Minister Hishamuddin Tun Hussein.
Northport-NST University and College will also initiate an English essay competition and Higher Education Minister Mustapha Mohamed will attend the prize giving.
Port authorities will also be launching the "Northport UiTM Book Award "2008" for UiTM transport and logistics students as part of the Northport CSR Education Programme.
These initiatives come after Northport recently held a Family Day event which attracted more than 10,000 staff and family members, a statement from port authorities said.
Northport's corporate social responsibility programme does not end there as it has also been joining initiatives to help keep the environment clean. Later this month, it will participate in a Tree Planting Programme organised by the Klang Municipal Council.
Northport has also held a variety of sports and recreational events this year, including bowling and treasure hunts which attracted 10,000 participants from various companies doing business with Northport, the release said.
Furthermore, to promote greater awareness on issues affecting stakeholders, Northport held the "Kemalangan Sifar" safety campaign earlier this year, which involved staff, vendors, contractors and suppliers. Authorities said that since this initiative was launched in February, accidents at Northport have fallen 85 per cent.
