Cherin appointed Long Beach port executive officer

2007-11-22

The Port of Long Beach Harbor Commissioners have appointed Long Beach Assistant City Auditor Alex Cherin as the port's new executive secretary.

Cherin replaces former Gustav Hein, who was let go by the board earlier this year after nearly 10 years of service with the port. The reason the commission decided to replace Hein remains unclear.

The executive secretary position, according to the port, is responsible among other things for coordinating all administrative and communications functions for the Harbor Commission, serves as a personal advisor on general issues, makes recommendations on public policy issues and coordinates trade missions and conferences.

Cherin was appointed as assistant city auditor in May 2006 shortly after a failed April 2006 bid for a Long Beach City Council seat. Previously Cherin practiced international trade and maritime law. He is also a judge pro tem for the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
