NYK plugs into eco-friendly dockside electric power in LA

2007-11-19

The 6,200-TEU NYK Atlas has become the first vessel at the Port of Los Angeles to plug into pollution-cutting local power rather than generating electricity from its own shipboard engine.

The 6.6 KV Alternative Maritime Powered (AMP) NYK Atlas used the direct shore-to-ship power supply while berthed for three days at Yusen Terminals. The ship is the first of 38 NYK vessels equipped to connect with local power sources, an NYK statement said.

"The NYK Atlas is leading us into the next generation of clean, at-dock ship operations," said LA port executive director Geraldine Knatz. "NYK and Yusen Terminals have been terrific partners in helping the Port of Los Angeles deploy Alternative Maritime Power."

Peter Keller, president of NYK Line (North America), said: "The NYK Atlas is the first of a new generation of container vessels that emphasise social and environmental responsibility to the communities where our vessels call."
