Beijing approves Guangzhou's big channel dredging job

2007-11-12

Port of Guangzhou has been given green light by Beijing to further expand its navigation channel, Xinhua reported.

The project costing CNY2.66 billion (US$358.4 million) will involve dredging and widening the channel to 17 metres and across to 234 metres, allowing one 120,000-ton ship to pass or two 50,000-tonners at one time.

An unnamed official from the Guangzhou port authority said project will help to raise the port's throughput.
