| SIPG to provide RFID service on routes to Savannah, Europe, Chongqing |

SHANGHAI International Port (Group) Co., Ltd (SIPG) plans to provide next-generation radio frequency identification (RFID) services on China-US, China-Europe and Yangtze River trade routes, Xinhua reports.
This comes amid speculation that the Port of Shanghai, one of the world's busiest ports, is trying to become a logistics information centre for the global port industry, including logistics firms, port operators, ship agencies and customs authorities.
The port operator's vice president Bao Qifan told the state media SIPG has been developing its RFID system since providing RFID services on the container shipping route from Shanghai to Yantai in eastern China.
SIPG has now joined the Port of Savannah to boost the application of the next-generation RFID system and improve the standard of container shipping services it provides. Bao Qifan said the company plans to launch the RFID system on the routes from Shanghai to Savannah and Chongqing within the next three months.
The RFID system will also be rolled out within the second half of the year on container shipping routes between Shanghai and Europe.
SIPG, the exclusive operator of all the public terminals in Shanghai port, is mainly engaged in cargo shipping, logistics information management, manufacture and lease of containers. Established in January 2003 by the former Shanghai Port Authority, SIPG operates 125 berths covering an overall length of about 20 kilometres, the report added. |
