Test Experiment of Hybrid Transfer Crane Starts at Tokyo Container Terminal
POSTED: 9:48 a.m. EDT, January 21,2007

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; Head office: Tokyo; President: Koji Miyahara) and TCM Corporation (TCM; Head office: Osaka; President: Atsushige Ishiki) have agreed to conduct a test experiment for the practical use of a hybrid transfer crane* that has been jointly developed by the two companies.

The test experiment will be conducted at NYK's Tokyo Container Terminal in Shinagawa for 12 months starting in mid-September.

The hybrid transfer crane is the first hybrid type transfer crane developed in Japan. Energy generated when lifting containers is saved in an electric storage device and recycled. Both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions will be reduced by 40 percent. Additionally, the size of the engine generator has been reduced in order to minimize noise during the loading operation.

NYK will continue to proactively collaborate in environment-concerned technology development not only for cargo but also cargo handling equipment, including transfer cranes.
