Maersk Line Confirms Move in Fruit Trade
POSTED: 9:17 a.m. EDT, December 28,2006

Maersk Line has confirmed to TradeWinds it will launch a direct weekly service between Europe and the Caribbean and Central America area as it battles for the banana trade.

The world's largest container carrier will use 5 ships, mainly of 2,500 TEU but with slots for at least 600 reefer boxes, on the new Central America&Caribbean Express (CRX) service starting in January.

The Danish giant's plans, which put it into direct competition with new liner services from reefer operator Seatrade, were revealed three weeks ago in TradeWinds.

The CRX service from Maersk will connect Southampton, Zeebrugge, Rotterdam and Algeciras in Europe with the Caribbean hubs of San Juan (Puerto Rico), Rio Haina (Dominican Republic), Kingston (Jamaica), Moin (Costa Rica) and Manzanillo (Panama). Moin is a major fruit-loading port for reefers.

The service, which will run its full cycle every five weeks, will focus on banana and fruit cargoes to Europe with the possibility of transhipment at Manzanillo to other destinations.

Analyst AXS-Alphaliner says four 2,530-TEU ships with 600 reefer plugs are likely to be used the "Maersk Nottingham" (built 2004), "Nedlloyd Marita" (built 2003), "Marianne Schulte" and "Anna Schulte" (both built 2001). The fifth is expected to be the 3,430-TEU "Santa Cristina" (built 2001) fitted with 800 reefer plugs.

Four of the vessels are being freed up by the closure of a Far East-West Coast South America service. The CRX also helps to fill a gap for Maersk left by the closure of the Europe-to-US East Coast leg of the Oceania pendulum that linked Australia with Asia, the US and Europe.
