Exports are in decline across much of the UK, yet companies in Yorkshire are building new contacts around the globe every day.
The UK economy is still flat and businesses must look overseas for sustainable growth.
Yorkshire is blessed with world-class expertise and a reputation for innovation, while the region's heritage of global links ensures businesses can make the most of a strong brand.
There's also a willingness to share experiences and support fellow business leaders via collaboration, striking new deals on foreign shores as a result.
A host of new exporters turned up at the Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield for Insider's latest debate, to hear veteran exporters tell their "war stories" and provide tips on breaking into overseas sales.
Their message was clear: the rewards are worth the challenge, but businesses must take small steps and manage the risk.
Manufacturing company AESSEAL in Rotherham has 230 locations worldwide, supplying customers in 104 countries.
Exports are crucial for business growth.
AESSEAL chief executive Jonathan Wilkinson said: "It wouldn't be the business it is now if we hadn't taken those tentative steps to export 20 years ago. Exports aren't easy, but the rewards far outweigh the risks."
Wilkinson concluded by saying businesses must use their common sense and avoid "mortgaging the future" on an international trade deal. He added: "You must protect what has made you successful in the UK, but you must take action and you must take it quickly to succeed."
