The United States and Japan will work together to try and ensure China follows international law and trade rules with a view to promoting fair trade and active investment, a senior U.S. State Department official said Monday.
"We have some shared interests in having a strong and economically healthy China that obeys the rules of international trade and international law," Cathy Novelli, undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment, told a press conference in Tokyo.
Novelli, who will attend a two-day strategic and economic dialogue between the United States and China starting in Beijing on Wednesday, said she will also discuss the issue of cybersecurity, which has become a source of friction between the two countries.
"Cybersecurity will certainly be part of it," Novelli said.
Regarding Russia's suspension of natural gas supplies to Ukraine, Novelli said the United States will continue offering its technical assistance to Ukraine to mitigate some of its dependence on Russian gas.
