The UK economy is continuing to show signs of growth but is "not yet secure", according to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).
The BCC's chief economist, David Kern, reiterated suggestions that the recovery is unbalanced and is too reliant on consumer spending. In addition to personal debt levels that are "too high", Mr Kern warned that the economy could stall.
He commented as the BCC released its Quarterly Economic Survey. The survey showed that UK export orders and services sales were at an all-time high. Manufacturing was grew consistently.
Mr Kern said: "UK growth is still reliant on consumer spending, driven by a resurgent housing market and a declining savings ratio."
"Investment and exports must play a larger contribution to our economic future, or else there is a risk that our recovery could stall," he said.
John Longworth, director general at the BCC, said: "Only by repairing our broken business finance system will viable, growing firms gain access to the capital that will allow them to invest in their staff and machinery, and enter new markets."
Yesterday (Monday), the Chancellor George Osborne revealed the latest measures aimed at boosting exports. He said the government will be investing £6m to boost the number of trader advisers for medium-sized businesses. Mr Osborne also said banks that lent to exporters under the UK Export Finance scheme will be able to take those loans to the Bank of England.
