The UK is not taking full advantage of the export opportunities with the world's emerging markets, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
New figures released by ONS show that only one country which is considered as an 'emerging market' was amongst the UK's top 10 export destinations in 2013.
Of economies considered to be emerging markets; China, Brazil, Russia, India, Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea and Turkey, only China featured in the UK top 10.
The US is the UK's biggest export market, accounting for 13.4% of all UK exports at a value of almost £41bn. Germany and Netherlands were the next largest export markets, accounting for £30bn (9.8%) and £25bn (8.4%) worth of all UK exports.
France, Ireland, Belgium & Luxembourg, China, Spain, Italy and the United Arab Emirates complete the top 10.
Emerging markets featured more heavily in the top 20. India, South Korea, Russia and Turkey are amongst the UK's top 20 export destinations, but none counted towards more than 1.7% of UK exports.
