DAGUPAN CITY, March 24 (PIA) - An alternative international seaport north of Manila can now service transnational ships passing through Ilocos shores.
The international sea port in Sual town became operational in November last year after the port’s first phase was completed.
Mayor Roberto Arcinue, however, said only barges are allowed to dock at the port in the meantime until the two other phases are completed.
"The seaport started operating in February and can accommodate barges in its docking area," Arcinue said during the KBP Forum held at the Philippine Information Agency office.
"Only barges can dock in the port because a barge's bottom is flat. Ships can also unload their cargo but they will have to park in deep sea (two kilometers away from the docking area). From there, its cargoes can be unloaded in a barge," he added.
Arcinue said a Philippine Ports Authority manager and representatives of the Bureau of Customs are fielded at the seaport to monitor port operations.
"The seaport can now support import-export trading," Arcinue said adding that the Sual port can help decongest the ports in Manila.
The Sual seaport is the second facility next to Currimao port in Ilocos Norte which can service international trade markets.
Locals said the seaport will spur economic development in Sual ranging from increased business activities to employment generation.
Arcinue said the port facility has opened its doors to investors while the local government works on completing the remaining phases of the port project. (MCA/VHS PIA1-Pangasinan)
