"For 2013, the DTI continued to apply strategic market and product approaches in its programs, projects and activities to promote the country's exports," DTI Undersecretary Ponciano C. Manalo, Jr. said in the statement.
The agency, through its Bureau of Export Trade Promotion (BETP), conducted six outbound and 22 inbound business promotion activities last year.
The outbound activities -- held in China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Japan -- assisted 50 exporters and generated $77.54 million of spot and booked sales. The sectors included were fresh and processed fruits, organic and conventional coconut products, coffee, pina fiber, processed poultry, seafood products, software development, and personal care products.
Inbound business matching activities, on the other hand, assisted 411 exporters and generated $2.02 million of spot and booked sales. It also matched Philippine exporters to 194 buyers and importers from Israel, Turkey, China, South Korea, the Netherlands, Singapore, Poland, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
The DTI also expects $2.408 million and $40.33 million from these inbound and outbound missions, respectively, in the next two years.
On top of these trade missions, the DTI said exporters also sold $879.019 million worth of goods at trade fairs held both here and abroad.
Broken down, $667.235 million came from local trade fairs while $211.784 million resulted from participation in international trade events, the DTI said.
"The DTI through CITEM (Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions) organized four international trade events in the country. These events intend to provide local manufacturers a boost in seeking opportunities in the traditional markets abroad and the emerging markets in Asia," Mr. Manalo said.
These international trade events include International Food Exhibition Philippines, DeXign Global Philippines, and Manila Furnishings and Apparel Manufacturers' Exchange.
"We also participated in 10 international trade fairs to promote our country as a viable source of quality products and to introduce the products of our exporters to foreign markets," the Trade official added.
These international fairs were Euroluce in Italy, the Hong Kong Houseware Fair, Maison Et Objet in France, the Hotel Show in Dubai, Fashion Access in Hong Kong, Gulfood in Dubai, Foodex in Japan, Anuga in Germany, Seafex in Dubai, and the China-ASEAN Expo in China.
In the future, even more export receipts are expected from other BETP efforts: a campaign to reach out to exporters in the regions as well as information sessions on using free trade deals.
"To develop new exporters and develop the country's supply base of globally competitive products and services to achieve the country's export growth targets, we heightened BETP's Regional Interactive Platform for Philippine Exporters (RIPPLES)," Mr. Manalo said.
Through RIPPLES, the DTI keeps exporters and potential exporters abreast of international market access requirements, product trends and developments, and other trade information for them to be competitive. -- Daryll Edisonn D. Saclag
