Thousands of passengers faced delays at Heathrow yesterday because of freak weather over the Atlantic. Domestic and international flights faced lengthy delays throughout the day after winds of up to 200mph and a lack of a tailwind - or jet stream - across the Atlantic held up dozens of long-haul flights heading to Heathrow from the US.




  Flybe 'fumes' incident caused by toilet   2008-6-16

A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after the flight crew were overcome by fumes from the aircraft lavatory, the Telegraph reports. The incident took place on a Flybe BAe 146 which was being flown from Birmingham to Belfast last September, and has been used to highlight 'fuming' incidents on flights - where problems with the air supply drawn from engines has been blamed for making crew and passengers sick. However, in this case it would appear that there is a completely different - if a little bizarre - explanation.

  Times: Pollution rules may be suspended to allow Heathrow expansion   2008-6-16

More than 60,000 extra flights will pass low over London each year under a government plan to suspend air pollution limits to allow Heathrow to expand, the Times reports. It says that the two existing runways will be used much more intensively, introducing 'mixed mode' operation meaning that people living under flight paths will no longer have half a day's respite from aircraft passing overhead.
