Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken delivery of the first new metro trains for the Circle Line (CCL) and the North East Line (NEL), which aim to reduce congestion and passenger waiting times, according to Railway Technology.
The two new trains are the first in a batch of 42 trains that were ordered for the CCL and NEL. The remaining trains will be delivered progressively over the next few months.
According to LTA, the addition of 24 and 18 new trains is expected to respectively increase fleet capacity by 60% on the CCL and 70% on the NEL.
The two trains will be rigorously tested to ensure reliable and safe operations, before being put into service from mid-2015.
The CCL trains will undergo testing at the Kim Chuan depot, whereas the NEL trains at the Sengkang depot.
A number of the tests include visual inspections, coupling of individual train cars and subsystem functionality testing.
The trains will also undergo a series of static tests, dynamic speed running tests and final tests on live tracks.
During static tests, the trains' response to commands will be checked, along with other specifications such as safety equipment, air conditioning, ventilation and lighting.
Under the dynamic speed running tests, the trains will be run on a test track to check its controls for driving, braking and stopping accuracy.
Before being allowed for passenger transport, the trains will finally be tested on live tracks.
