European Gateway Services (EGS) and TX Logistik AG (TXL) joint initiative of a thrice weekly intermodal connection between Rotterdam to Bavarian business hubs Nuremberg and Munich launched two years ago has led to an increased demand.
The service has required extra capacity of a further train since the beginning of April, said TXL director of Maritime Dirk Jeflke, supported by volumes of both continental cargo units and maritime shipping containers creating overbooking.
According to TXL chief sales & marketing officer Frank Lehner the result of increased capacity has seen an additional arrival and departure on Thursday evening in Nuremberg and Munich since April, on top of existing arrivals and departures on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The service allows for shipping containers from Rotterdam to be forwarded to the southern German hinterland while cargo from export-focused large corporations and medium-sized companies in Bavaria has access to Rotterdam and its many overseas shipping line via the CTT and the two Euromax and ECT Delta container terminals.
Additionally, the service allows for transfers via truck and barge to other terminals and ports such as Antwerp, Vlissingen, Terneuzen and Moerdijk.
TXL Logistik is responsible for organisation, dispatching and tracking packages, which provide direct connections from southern Germany to Bremerhaven, Hamburg and Rotterdam with appealing forwarding options from a single source, said Mr Jeflke.
"This allows our customers to use our train product for various multimodal transport solutions," he said.
