RHAETIAN Railway (RhB), Switzerland's largest independently-owned railway, saw a 2.9% increase in passenger traffic last year, according to the company's annual results, which also show freight performance remains below expectations.
RhB carried a total of 9.8 million passengers on its 384km metre-gauge network in 2013, but freight volumes fell by 14.1% year-on-year as the railway was hit by declining demand for timber.
Despite these difficulties, operating revenues reached SFr 127.6m ($US 144.9m), the highest is RhB's 125-year history, with Ebit of SFr 394,000. RhB received a total of SFr 162m in subsidies from federal and cantonal sources in 2013.
Investment in the network, including infrastructure maintenance and renewal of rolling stock, totalled SFr 192m.
