Knorr-Bremse has significantly expanded its locomotive business in the growth market of China in the past year. In 2013, the Rail Vehicle Systems Division supplied braking equipment for more than 1,000 locomotive units.
For the Chinese locomotive manufacturer CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Company and CNR Dalian Locomotive Works, the subsidiary companies and joint-venture partners of Knorr-Bremse in China produced braking systems for locomotives which are being used in passenger and freight trains throughout China. Knorr-Bremse attained more than half of the sales in 2013 with six new locomotive classes, for which individual solutions have been developed together with the local partners.
The company expects further orders for braking systems for various locomotive classes, for a comparable amount, in 2014 as well. Firm orders and general agreements already exist for equipping 900 locomotive units.
Dr. Dieter Wilhelm, Member of the Board of Knorr-Bremse AG and responsible for the Rail Vehicle Systems Division: "The high quality and reliability of the braking systems we devel-oped are of great importance to the Chinese market. In addition, customers appreciate the fact that we guarantee availability on short notice for the current locomotive classes. Throughout the entire service life, from the receipt of order to the aftermarket and service area, we provide technical support for our systems throughout China - in over 80 locomo-tive depots in more than 60 cities. Knorr-Bremse can only offer this comprehensive service because we continuously investmented and because we expanded our engineering expertise on site."
The national railway company, China Railways, has expanded the provision of additional transport capacities in freight traffic in recent years. This expansion involves especially the supply of raw materials and gives additional positive impulses for the Knorr-Bremse order situation. The latest generation of freight trains travel at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. Knorr-Bremse braking systems are also being used in passenger trains with speeds of 160 kilometers per hour.
The Knorr-Bremse Group has established itself as a leading system supplier in the locomo-tive market in China since 2005 and has so far equipped more than 7,000 locomotives with braking systems. On top of that, the company successfully expanded its activities in China in high-speed traffic during the past 10 years. In further large-scale orders in recent years for local passenger transportation, Knorr-Bremse has equipped the subway in the Chinese cities of Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai as well as 12 other large Chinese cities with braking systems. Most recently, Knorr-Bremse obtained a contract with an order volume of more than EUR 500 million to supply the braking equipment as well as part of the door and air-conditioning systems for 435 high-speed trains.
