Alstom set to deliver first Citadis Compact tram to Aubagne local authority

French transport group Alstom is set to deliver its first 22-metre long Citadis Compact tram to the local authority of Pays d'Aubagne et de l'Etoile today, according to Railway Technology.
Designed specifically for medium-sized networks and secondary lines with reduced traffic, the high-capacity version tram can accommodate up to 146 passengers.
The first latest-generation tram will undergo a series of track tests until July, following its arrival at the maintenance centre and depot in Aubagne.
The tram will be operational in September, and features exclusive double doors to make access and passenger movements much easier, permanent magnet motors to reduce electricity consumption, and key components like bogies and air conditioning systems.
Apart from limiting downtimes and boosting efficiency, the tram is highly modular, allowing the interior fittings such as layout of the seats and luggage racks to be adapted.
The carriages were designed at Alstom Transport's Saint-Ouen site and are developed and built in La Rochelle site, France.
The motors were built at Alstom Transport's Ornans site, while the bogies were manufactured at Le Creusot. The drive train was produced at Tarbes site, while the onboard computer systems are made in Villeurbanne.
Aubagne local authority placed the order for eight Citadis compact trams for about Euro 14m in October 2011. The order includes an option for five to 10 additional trams, which can be taken up before 2017.
Alstom has sold more than 1,700 Citadis trams to 43 towns and cities worldwide to date, of which almost 1,500 are in operation.
