The Port of Felixstowe will officially open the Ipswich Chord rail link this week that will cut rail freight transits by one hour.
The Chord provides a 1.2 kilometre double track link to the Great Eastern Main Line and the East Suffolk Line, a direct route from Felixstowe, no longer needing switching in the Ipswich Yard, according to Shipping Gazette.
Rail volumes at the Port of Felixstowe hit a record 830,000 TEU in 2013.
The one-hour saving from the UK's busiest container port was funded the European Union Trans European Transport Network (TEN-T) and the Strategic Freight Network, and is expected to improve the efficiency of rail and sea freight operators.
Said Hutchison Ports (UK) chief executive Clemence Cheng: "The Ipswich Chord, will allow a greater number of 30-wagon trains to operate from the port providing greater choice and lower carbon emissions for our customers."
Said Rail Minister Stephen Hammond: "We are investing record amounts into transforming our railways because we recognise they are a key engine for growth. It is great to see that investment taking shape on the ground through projects like the Ipswich Chord.
