Classification society ClassNK is to acquire maritime software house, NAPA, in a deal that reflects the growing importance of software technology in improving ship design and operational efficiency, according to Shipping Gazette.
The acquisition is expected to significantly enhance the success and capabilities of both organisations.
For ClassNK, which has worked with NAPA for a decade, the deal is a chance to expand and improve the wide range of services it offers to shipowners and shipyards, while providing NAPA with the support to accelerate expansion of existing operations and access new markets, a joint company statement said.
ClassNK provides safety and certification services for 8,500 vessels representing one fifth of the world's merchant fleet, and NAPA's software is utilised by shipyards designing 90 per cent of the world's newbuilds and by major shipowners.
Said ClassNK vice president Yasushi Nakamura: "Through this agreement we can ensure that NAPA's ship design and operation solutions remain available to the entire maritime industry, while also providing NAPA with necessary tools and resources to further expand its innovative development work."
Said NAPA president Juha Heikinheimo: "Through this acquisition, the development of solutions for optimising fuel costs will be accelerated. Improving software to enhance the safety of vessels, both at the design phase and during operation, will remain a core focus for NAPA."
