Community group will hold protest in Melbourne's west to urge the Victorian Government to impose night curfews on trucks.
Traffic is expected to come to a standstill on a busy road in Melbourne's west on April 2 as the Maribyrnong Truck Action Group (MTAG) holds a protest.
The disruption on Moore Street is expected to last at least 30 minutes when the community protest group holds its slumber party protest at 8am to demand night and weekend curfews on trucks.
MTAG claims night time truck traffic has increased by 400 per cent since 2006, with up to 670 trucks travelling on Moore Street each night.
It wants Victoria's transport department, VicRoads, to implement an immediate curfew and for trucks bound for the Port of Melbourne to use CityLink.
"Given the huge loads many of these trucks carry, the price per tonne of freight delivered to and from the port to pay for CityLink tolls would be negligible," MTAG claims.
"It could be easily absorbed by the industry and residents should not be subsidising Victoria's freight task with their health and safety."
The group has waged numerous protests in the past to pressure governments to reduce truck numbers in Melbourne's west.
It claims the high number of trucks using residential roads to travel to and from the Port of Melbourne is having serious consequences on the health and wellbeing of residents.
