CSX plans to cut emissions by 2011

2009-7-3

CSX Corporation has announced a carbon-dioxide reduction effort as the railroad operator called itself the first major US transportation provider to partake in a federal effort to cut greenhouse-gas emissions, Dow Jones reported.

The third-largest US railroad by revenue said it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by eight percent per revenue-ton mile by 2011.

CSX said that will equate to reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 2.4 million tonnes - equal to taking 441,000 cars off the road each year, or burning 5.6 million fewer barrels of oil.
