DB Schenker is building a new "green-mega-hub" to host its forwarding and logistics activities in Melbourne.
The German forwarding giant said the 13,500sq metre warehouse and office hub would employ 230 staff from four different locations.
DB Schenker said its customers would benefit from the "streamlined processes and the strategic location at Melbourne Airport" which would "speed-up services from customs clearance to delivery."
The facility will handle 300 daily truck runs, 2,000 tonnes of air freight and more than 150 containers per month.
Schenker claimed it would also be a green hub by storing 450,000 litres of rain water for fire protection and irrigation; having solar panels and 80% of its forklifts will be electrically-powered.
Ron Koehler, CEO of Schenker Australia, said: "The new hub proves that economic and environmental initiatives go hand in hand."
"By using rain water and solar energy we protect the environment and operate cost efficiently at the same time."
"Long-term commitment and investment in sustainable practices are part of our core values and by contributing to the environment all stakeholders of Schenker Australia will benefit."
