China's logistics demand growth slows down

A report on China's logistics industry in 2008 shows that the industry generated a value of CNY89.9 trillion (US$13.2 trillion) last year, which increased 19.5 per cent year on year, but the growth was 6.7 per cent down over 2007.

The report said the statistics mean that the nation's demand for logistics services has slowed in growth, Xinhua News Agency reported.

According to the report, which was released by China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP), the total cost for the nation's logistics operations last year rose 16.2 per cent to CNY5.5 trillion. The growth was 4.4 per cent slower over 2007.

The ratio of logistics cost to GDP was lightly down by 0.1 per cent to 18.1 per cent.

The industry's value added totalled to nearly 2 trillion, with a 4.5 per cent slower growth of 15.4 per cent.

The value of logistics operations concerning industry products increased 20.8 per cent to CNY79.9 trillion, taking up 88.8 per cent in China's total logistics value. Value of import cargo logistics operations was up by 8.2 per cent to CNY7.9 trillion, taking up 8.7 per cent in the nation's total. Value of logistics operations concerning agricultural products and recycled products respectively rose by 17.6 and 3.8 per cent.

Cost for transportation increased 13.2 per cent to CNY2.9 trillion, 6.4 per cent slower than the growth in 2007, taking up 52.6 per cent in the nation's total logistics cost, which was 1.8 per cent less comparing to the prior year.
