Chairmen of the RF and Finnish delegations on extension of the lease of Russia's part of Saimaa canal have signed a memorandum on completion of negotiations as regards preparation of an intergovernmental agreement on the lease of Saimaa Canal zone, press center of the RF Ministry of Transport reports. The lease period is to be extended by 50 years with the lease payment of EUR 1.2 mln per year.
The Saimaa Canal is a transportation canal that connects lake Saimaa with the Gulf of Finland near Vyborg, Russia. The canal was built from 1845 to 1856 and opened on September 7, 1856.
