Tesco and cold storage expand

Two of Malaysia's leading supermarket chains have recently opened new outlets.

GCH Retail, the owner of the Cold Storage supermarket chain, opened its first store in Kuching, East Malaysia. This is Cold Storage's 19th outlet in Malaysia.

Cold Storage is the leading outlet for New Zealand food and beverage products targeting the retail sector.

Tesco Stores has also recently opened another Tesco Extra store, the seventh in Malaysia.

According to Tesco, Malaysias recent surge in fuel prices and food costs has had an impact on Malaysian consumers and their shopping habits.

There in a growing trend for consumers to shop closer to their home or work to avoid having to travel long distances, enabling them to cut down on fuel consumption.

In addition, the increase in price of staple food items has resulted in a higher demand for fresh produce, meat, seafood and poultry as more people are now cooking from home rather than eating out.
