2008-6-4

Thailand plans to spend THB73 billion (NZ$2.85 billion) for its second phase expansion of the 19-month-old Suvarnabhumi Airport with 10 upgraded projects in the pipeline.

A THB3.6 billion (NZ$141 million) third runway is one of the projects which will be equipped with an auto-landing system considered the safest system that the aviation industry has to offer.

NZTE Thailand staff suggest this is an excellent opportunity for New Zealand companies and consultants to be involved with in Asia.

Other projects include the construction of an automated people mover, car park and a noise pollution reduction scheme to will be implemented over five years.

Thailand's Transport Ministry also plans to proceed with the construction of a second domestic terminal at Suvarnabhumi Airport with an aim to relieve passenger traffic at the main terminal.

This expansion scheme is expected to be completed by 2013 and will enable Suvarnabhumi Airport to serve more than 60 million passengers each year.
