Beef sourcing issues

2008-6-19

Claims that foreign beef is British by some UK restaurants has prompted calls for tighter regulations in the food industry.

A BBC investigation discovered that 20 percent of sampled restaurants in the south west of England were found to be selling foreign beef but labelled it 'local' or British.

The investigation has prompted calls for tighter regulations in the food industry to ensure correct country of origin labelling.

When revealed that the likely origins of the beef were Brazil or Botswana, consumer concerns over provenance, traceability and health safety issues of meat consumed in the UK surfaced.
