Wood pushed for China projects

2008-6-12

A push to expand the use of New Zealand pine in China was spearheaded with the New Zealand Treated Timber Design Awards which were completed recently.

In collaboration with Modern Group, the leading architecture and design institute in East China, the awards were launched by the New Zealand Wood Innovation Centre and concluded this month.

The focus of this year's event was to influence professional designers on the properties and innovative uses of New Zealand pine as well as to educate on the specifications of the product.

This event was well promoted through a number of architectural and design firms in Shanghai, and more than 40 designs were submitted.

Winning designs were selected by a judging panel made up of specialists in architectural and landscape design areas. The winning designs varied from work at coastal resorts, residential communities, public parks and leisure areas along the proposed Fishermen's Wharf at the Bund in Shanghai.

Throughout the event, designers demonstrated their understanding in applying treated New Zealand timber to outdoor applications such as fencing, claddings, walkways, pergolas and bridges.

The awards event was also used to highlight the sustainability of New Zealand pine as a construction material.
