MINISTER STRAHL ANNOUNCES NEW AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING NORTHERN SCIENCE JOURNALISM

2008-5-27

The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for M¨¦tis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the creation of the International Polar Year (IPY) Canada Award for Excellence in Northern Science Journalism.

"The Government of Canada is one of the largest contributors in the world to the International Polar Year project, and as we learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the Far North, more Canadians need to know about the stories unfolding there, " said Minister Strahl. "Science and research form the foundation of our government's integrated Northern Strategy, which is focussing more federal resources and attention in the North than at any time in Canada's history."

Today's announcement coincides with the annual Conference of the Canadian Science Writers' Association, which this year is focussing on northern science and IPY and is being held in Whitehorse, Yukon.

The IPY Canada Award for Excellence in Northern Science Journalism will recognize Canadian stories related to IPY research published in Canada. The award will include two prizes of $2,500 each for English and French submissions, with winners to be announced at next year's annual Conference of the Canadian Science Writers' Association.
