Schenker builds new freight forwarding terminal in Austria

2008-5-17

DB SCHENKER, a member of German rail operator Deutsche Bahn AG, has begun building a modern freight forwarding terminal for land transport and logistics in Bergheim, near Salzburg, Austria.

A company release said the EUR21 million (US$32.55 million) terminal will be largest created so far for Schenker's European land transport network. The facility will serve as a transport hub for the flow of goods in Europe.

The terminal will be constructed on an area measuring a total of 80,000 square metres. The transshipment hall will cover an area measuring 10,000 square metres and be equipped with 115 docking gates. The facility will also have a 4,000-square metre logistics hall and a 3,400-square metre office building.

"The new location has excellent transport connections by road and by rail, with a link to the local Salzburg railroad nearby and the possibility of a dedicated siding linked to the Salzburg-Oberndorf connection," a company statement said.

So as to keep the noise levels down, the terminal will house only 40 electrically operated floor conveyors. The hall also has an underground conveyor belt system with an average capacity of 400 tons per hour, corresponding to around 680 pallets, which is expected to improve safety standards and lower operating costs.
