New health requirement for Malaysia cheese imports

2008-5-16

Cheese imported into Malaysia from July 1 this year must go through an extra step of compliance.

Every consignment of cheese must be accompanied by a Health Certificate and a Certificate of Analysis for Bacterial Parameter Listeria Monocytogenes.

The certificate must be issued by an accredited authority of the exporting country.

Malaysia's Food and Quality Control Division is allowing a grace period of three months up to June 30.

Up until then any existing cheese imports where samples have shown a positive result will be subjected to Level 5 alert (hold, test and release).

The rest will remain at Level 4 Alert (surveillance and examination).

If the importers fail to present the necessary documents a Level 5 alert will be imposed.
